Certificate Certification is often given to students on completion of a course or level. There is no one true form of Reiki certification. In the West a certificate signifies that a student has simply completed whatever it is that the Reiki Master teaches. There are no across the board standards. It is possible to finish Levels 1, 2 or even 3 in a weekend. This leaves the student feeling temporarily powerful without actually becoming empowered. When an individual receives attunements over a couple of days the body's energy cannot differentiate between having received a Level 1, 2 or 3 certificate. Reiki is not about certification it is about personal practice. In traditional Japanese teachings a certificate is given to indicate that certain levels of proficiency have been reached and that the student is just beginning the actual level.
Chakra Chakra is a Sanskrit word often translated as 'wheel of energy'. Chakras, though Indian in origin, are popularly used in many forms of energetic work today including Reiki. It does not seem that Usui Mikao or Hawayo Takata used the chakra system and yet both the Western and some Japanese methods today have adapted to using them since the 1980s. Chakras have been taught in Reiki by a number of Hawayo Takata's students including John Gray and Iris Ishikuro. Barbara Weber Ray also bases her, The Radiance Technique, on the chakra system. Hawayo Takata spoke of the 'true energy in the body that lies in the bottom of the stomach about 2 inches below the naval' in notes which are included in the Gray Book. Here she is writing about the hara energetic system that is used in Japan.
Chiba The name of Usui Mikao's ancestors. The Chiba clan was one of the most famous and influential samurai families in all of Japan according to the Chiba family records. The Usui family crest, otherwise known as the Chiba mon, is a design comprised of the moon and a star. The Usui Mikao's memorial stone states that the famous samurai, Tsunetane Chiba (1118 to 1201) was Usui's ancestor.
Cho ku ret Symbol A non-traditional symbol taught in Seichim. Channeled by students of Patrick Zeigler.
Cleansing process With any form of natural healing method there exists a cleansing. This may happen immediately after a treatment or within a few days. The client's body draws in energy and allows it to wash through clearing the body out on a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual level. Also called a clearing or a healing crisis.
Crystal Grid This is a non-traditional technique used in a Western system of Reiki, often taught in Advanced Reiki Training courses. Crystals are placed in a clock like formation called a grid. A list of persons, places or things to be healed is placed in the center of the grid with the intent that Reiki be continuously sent to it.
