Mari Hall
American Reiki Master Mari Hall is a Professor of Social Services and a Doctorate in Theology. She is the founder and director of the International Association of Reiki, a fully accredited school of Reiki. Mari teaches Reiki and self-development courses through out the world. She is the best selling author of Practical Reiki, Reiki for Common Ailments, Reiki for the Soul and Reiki a practical way to Harmony.

Halu Symbol
A non-traditional symbol used in Karuna Reiki, Tera Mai, and Karuna Ki. It is said to heal unconscious patterns, the shadow, sexual and physical abuse issues and works on psychic and psychological attack. This was the third symbol retrieved by a 'Very High Being' from the Inner Planes and given to Kathleen Milner and Marcy Miller from the USA.

Hand Positions
Hand positions refer to the specific hand positions used when performing a Reiki treatment. Practitioners place their hands on specific body regions with the intention to assist the energy to move through the body. The purpose is to clear and strengthen the client's spiritual and energetic connection. A one-hour Reiki treatment is made up of a practitioner placing hands on (or just off) the body of the client.
It appears that in Usui Mikao's traditional method only five head positions were used. Similar head positions are written up in the Reiki Ryoho Hikkei and the Ryoho Shishin. Eguchi Toshihiro, a well-known healer around the time of Usui Mikao, is said to have used a similar set of hand positions in his manuals. It is claimed that Hawayo Takata taught 12 positions (including the head, front and back of torso). Other Reiki systems may use a different number of positions. In the Western system students practice hand positions on themselves. For the traditional 5 head positions click here

Hara
(lit. Japanese) belly or abdomen. The hara is like a battery that can be recharged through physical and spiritual techniques. Energy is stored at this point of the body. From here it expands through the whole body. In Usui Mikao's and the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai's teachings many techniques are taught to stimulate the hara centers. This is not unique in itself as the hara is an innate element of Japanese philosophy and culture. Whether practicing go (a Japanese game), sado (flower arrangement) or budo (martial arts) - the focus is on the hara. For more information about the hara click here.

Harajuku
Harajuku, Aoyama, Tokyo. The place where Usui Mikao started his first official seat of learning in 1922. This is described on the Usui Mikao memorial Stone..

Harth Symbol
A non-traditional symbol used in Karuna Reiki, Tera Mai, and Karuna Ki. It is said to help heal relationships, develop good habits, heal addictions, develops compassionate action and to contact spiritual beings. This was the second symbol retrieved by a 'Very High Being' from the Inner Planes and given to Kathleen Milner and Marcy Miller from the USA.

Hatamoto
The hatamoto were the shogun's personal guard. Usui Mikao's family was hatamoto samurai -– a high level within the ranks of samurai.

Hatsurei Ho
(lit. Japanese) to generate greater amounts of spiritual energy. This technique includes the techniques kenyoku ho, joshin kokyu ho and seishin toitsu.
Tomita Kaiji describes a version of this technique, using waka, in his book Reiki To Jinjutsu - Tomita Ryu Teate Ryoho that was published in 1933. Hiroshi Doi claims that the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai also practiced this technique. For the Tomita Kaiji version of hatsurei ho click here

Hayashi Chie
The wife of Hayashi Chujiro. She continued on at her husband's clinic after his death, becoming the 2nd President of the Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu kai. For more information about other students of Hayashi Chujiro click here.

Hayashi Chujiro
(1880 -1940) One of the 21 teacher students of Usui Mikao. He was a Soto Zen practitioner who naturally included Shinto into his personal practices. In May 1925, Hayashi Chujiro became a student of Mikao Usu'’s school in Tokyo. He was a retired Naval Officer (still in the reserves) and surgeon and was about 45 years old when he met Usui Mikao. The length of his study with Usui Mikao was relatively short as he only studied the teachings for 10 months before Usui Mikao's death in March 1926.
It is interesting to note that Hayashi Chujiro didn't teach the reiju (traditionally without symbols and mantras) but instead taught a reiju called an attunement or initiation (by Hawayo Takata), which includes the mantras and symbols. Some researchers today question whether Hayashi Chujiro actually was one of the 21 teacher students trained by Usui Mikao. Hayashi Chujiro was known to have a healing guide called the Ryoho Shishin. It appears to be an almost exact copy of the Reiki Ryoho Hikkei's own healing guide. Today people believe that Hayashi Chujiro may well have written the Ryoho Shishin at Usui Mikao's request. Hayashi Chujiro is thought to have been a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai at first but broke away in 1931 beginning his own branch called Hayashi Reiki Ryoho Kenkyu kai.
He wrote in 1938 that he had trained 13 Reiki Masters. Some of his students were Tatsumi, Shuo Matsui (not a teacher), Hawayo Takata, Hayashi Chie, and Chiyoko Yamaguchi.
He passed away on the 10th of May 1940. Hawayo Takata reported that he died ceremoniously of a self-induced stroke, Chiyoko Yamaguchi recounts that he had killed himself by 'breaking an artery' while others say that as he was a military man the honorable method of death would certainly have been seppuku. For more information about other students of Usui Mikao click here.
Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai - (lit. Japanese) Hayashi Spiritual Energy Research Society. Hayashi Chujiro started this society in 1931. After his death his wife, Hayashi Chie, became known as the 2nd president.

Healing Attunement
William Lee Rand developed this non-initiatory attunement with the intent that it increases healing. Some masters are concerned that it gives the recipients the ability to practice Reiki yet they don't have the knowledge to work with the energy.

Hibiki
(lit. Japanese) sound, echo, vibration. Hibiki is sensed when the body is being scanned or treated. It may feel like heat/cold/tingling/pain/itchiness/pulsating etc in the palm of the hand.

Hikari No Kokyu Ho
(lit. Japanese) breathing in the light method. Also called joshin kokyu ho and is part of the technique hatsurei ho.

Hiei Zan
A mountain near Kyoto where there is a main Tendai temple complex, enryaku ji. Usui Mikao is said to have studied Tendai Buddhism here. For more information about hiei zan click here.

Hikkei
(lit. Japanese) companion. Often called manual or handbook in the West.

Hosanna symbol
A non-traditional symbol used in Tera Mai for clearing. Originally channeled by Eileen Gurhy from the USA.

Hui Yin Breath
Non-traditional breath technique used with a non-traditional attunement process.
